After being awarded a degree of B Sc.(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and serving a graduate apprenticeship in industry, he specialized in heating and ventilating, winning the First Prize in the IHVE (now CIBSE) Diploma examination and was soon after appointed Chief H&V Engineer at Vauxhall Motors at the age of only 24.

His subsequent career included periods in contracting and consulting before spending most of his career in the Health Service, becoming Chief Engineer and Capital Projects Manager of the NW Regional Health Authority.

He has always been active in promoting professional standards, teaching University courses and being an Institution Examiner.  He has served on and chaired many national committees of professional Institutions and the NHS, concerned with both engineering and estate management.
